Toy Car MapHealthcare professionals such as Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants can enjoy a great deal of career enhancement from traveling, otherwise known as locum tenems work. A thriving travel nursing field has proven both lucrative and enjoyable for many traveling nurses — and you can get in on the same traveling fun and career expansion. Nurse Practitioners enjoy traveling and can benefit from it.

Not only can Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants enjoy the same benefits of travel, but their skills can often be even more sought after. This is especially true as healthcare reform unfolds and some states are increasing the domain of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants, allowing them to do more in the field.

Scrubs Mag recently ran an interview with a Nurse Practitioner who said that locum tenems work had changed her life. Scrubs’ Q&A with Cindy Leiffer (NP) details how an injury made her leave a perm position and eventually hit the road.

On the benefits of locum tenems work, she told Scrubs, “Working locum tenens assignments has given me the ability to focus solely on the clinical aspects of patient care. So much of the work in healthcare these days has become about the business and administrative end of things. Those of us in the locum tenens field are able to give patients our undivided attention and care. We still have to do the paper and computer work associated with direct patient care, but we don’t have the administrative duties or worries about the business aspects of a practice.”

Leiffer also added, “Locums is also unique in that it provides the opportunity to pick up additional income when you need it. If you’re in between jobs, or looking to use up some time-off from another position, you can bring in a decent income.”
