Happy National Nurse Practitioner Week!

November 9-15, 2014 is National Nurse Practitioner Week. Happy National Nurse Practitioner Week to all of you awesome NPs out there!

This special week of recognition is held each year to “celebrate these exceptional health care providers and to remind lawmakers of the importance of removing outdated barriers to practice so that NPs will be allowed to practice to the full extent of their experience and education,” according to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

The AANP website also includes a downloadable PDF resource guide containing the following:

  • Sample News Release
  • Sample Proclamation
  • Community Activity Ideas
  • AANP Partner Activities
  • NP Week Talking Points
  • NP Fact Sheet
  • Guidelines for Writing a Letter to the Editor
  • Media Interview Guide
  • Radio, TV and Print Ads
  • Social Media Suggestions
  • Posters
  • Highlights from Last Year’s NP Week

Here are a couple of the NP Week talking points:

  • “There are more than 192,000 NPs practicing in America today, providing solutions to the healthcare provider crisis.”
  • “19 states and the District of Columbia have granted full practice authority to NPs, giving patients more direct access to the primary, acute and specialty care services that NPs provide.”

Especially in the face of an increased need in healthcare staffing — which will only grow larger in the coming years, as the Baby Boomer generation ages — it’s a super important time to make sure the public and our lawmakers are aware of the need for legislation to address expanding the role of NPs in the healthcare industry.

So, we hope you spend this week celebrating and educating everyone within earshot — Happy National Nurse Practitioner Week!
